What is Obamacare?
The Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, is a tax credit the government makes available to people to help them afford healthcare insurance. It is based on a sliding scale of help that uses your family size and income to determine the level of help you are entitled to.
The available plans are exactly the same as private healthcare plans available to the public for regular price. If you use the Marketplace, you are able to use your tax credit to help pay for most, if not all, of your monthly premium costs. Every year, there are about 100 plans for a person to choose from.

Will I have to pay back money if I enroll in Obamacare?
No, enrolling in Obamacare does not mean you have to pay back the government for the premium tax credits or subsidies you receive to make your health insurance more affordable. These subsidies are designed to help people with lower incomes afford coverage.
However, if a person declares that they make way less money than they actually do, then that person shouldn’t have gotten as much help as a person that makes much less than them. In that case, the government will ask that person to pay the difference of what they should have received. Therefore, it’s crucial to report any major increases in your income or family size to the Marketplace promptly to ensure you receive the correct amount of financial assistance. We are here to help all year.

What if my doctor doesn't accept my Obamacare healthcare plan?
All doctors do not accept every insurance plan. If your current doctor does not accept your Obamacare healthcare plan, you still have options. You can:
- Check with other healthcare providers in your network who accept your health plan.
- Contact the Missouri Insurance Exchange for assistance in finding a doctor or healthcare facility that accepts your specific plan.
- Consider switching to a different plan during the open enrollment period that includes your preferred healthcare provider in its network.
What if the deductible or copay is too high?
If you find that the deductible or copay for your Obamacare plan is too high for your budget, there are a few options:
- Explore different plan options during the open enrollment period to find one with lower out-of-pocket costs.
- Check if you qualify for additional financial assistance based on your income.
- Consider enrolling in a plan with a Cost Share Reduction (CSR) if you are eligible; these plans often have lower out of pocket costs and can help you save on medical expenses.
